Automate everything with citizen developers

Medux is the largest provider of medical support materials in the Netherlands. Every day thousands people receive wheelchairs, crutches and other care materials. Even more are being served with repairs and maintenance on their apparel.

With many employees on the road, a lot of regulations and high standards of quality, the amount of administrative tasks is high. Resulting in many paper forms, reports and separate IT solutions. To keep up with the demands for automation with their regular IT systems was simply not feasible.

After some experiments with Google AppSheet, Medux decided to take another approach. Many of the most pressing demands for more efficiency could be handled with relatively simple apps. So why not train the people to create apps themselves?

In less than 2 days of training non-technical employees were able to build apps that solved some of their most bothersome challenges. Having a group of enthusiastic citizen developers is a fantastic starting point, but it also creates new some challenges. Every well managed IT landscape knows boundaries. To ensure proper security and compliance to privacy regulations, as well as technical stability and data integrity, you need governance and guidelines.

Appalot has worked closely with the AppSheet team at Medux to help them set up a full centre of enablement for no-code. providing them with technical support, training materials, designing a community platform, creating a citizen developer toolkit and formulating guidelines.

Now Medux has a growing army of citizen developers in a structured and well supported environment. The apps they build are starting to make life easier for the Medux people. They are often saving their users a lot of time and the organisation a lot of money subsequently. They've built mobile client information systems for mechanics on the road, made fitting a wheelchair easier, managed preventative maintenance... Sometimes saving totals of hundreds of working hours a week. And more is on the way.

For many situations citizen developers and a no-code platform can prove an effective combination. Leading to empowered employees and more efficiency. Clear boundaries and support structures are paramount for success however. Would you like to know more about setting up a centre of enablement for citizen developers?
